The art of prioritizing and be effective

with 4 comments

Vilfredo Pareto was a very interesting guy. Political sociologist and economist (but trained in engineering, like me), was a professor at the University of Lausanne , Switzerland.

His most important work, School of Political Economy, 1897, was something innovative for its time but very visible today: 80% of wealth and income was produced and owned by 20% of the population. But the most interesting is that this principle can also be applied outside the economy (20% for the causes generate 80% of results).

Think of some analogies that can be made:

  • 20% of customers generate 80% of financial return
  • 20% of their time generates 80% of their pay
  • 80% of the profits of your business comes from 20% of its line of products or services
  • 80% of their pleasure comes from 20% of things you do

And this list can stretch more and more (surely have arisen several mental images in his mind).

Now the fateful question: why do you insist on looking busy? Why do you insist on being multi-tasking? Why you do not have time to do what they like?

Be an employee or entrepreneur, you have not caught "trying-look-too-busy-as-if-not-what-the-go-pessaos thinking"? This is tyranny! Worse, a tyranny hypocrite!

Would it not be much better rethink this way of life and change the tone for effectiveness? Of course, many are afraid of not being more helpful or appear unoccupied, but I believe we must work to be happy.

No one at the end of life, on his deathbed, proclaiming: "should have worked more", "should have stayed less time with people I like." No! Most of the reports is the opposite. Do you want to thicken the statistics?

I found good tips with Timothy Ferris .

The time is now to be happy. Prioritize, is effective and has time to enjoy life. This is perhaps one of the greatest examples of leadership that you can give to future generations.
