In all this Cuban, a man stands on the horizon of my memory like Mars at perihelion. Perceptions about the human mind - the Stanford Prison experiment
This experiment is the most intriguing of all of which involve the study of human behavior. In 1971, Philip Zimbardo , former president of the American Psychological Association and today a professor at Stanford University , decided to test at least curious to transform the Department of Psychology in a simulated prison. The aim was to assess how people react when they were considered normal subjected to a radical change in the normal roles of their lives.
Volunteers showed up after answering a newspaper advertisement. A series of evaluations were made in order to enable choice of persons who were in good health and which are stable mentally. We all know that human beings follow trends. We copy the way people dress, walk, speak and behave. This is very pronounced in adolescence, when the need to be accepted is more intense. But to what extent this tendency to be equal affect us? Do you think human beings are capable of giving a wrong answer, even though the correct one, just to keep the other?
Na década de 50 do século passado, Solomon Asch conduziu uma série de experimentos que comprovariam a tendência humana de seguir a opinião dos outros.
O experimento
Ele fez o seguinte: foram colocadas várias pessoas em uma sala com o objetivo de fazer um teste de visão. Variações da figura abaixo eram mostradas ao grupo e, após cada uma, perguntava-se qual das linhas (A, B ou C) era igual à da esquerda. O grupo era composto de 9 pessoas, sendo que 8 eram atores, ou seja, após algumas rodadas dando a resposta correta, eles começavam a dar a mesma resposta incorreta. Eles faziam parte do jogo sem a outra pessoa saber. Metade do tempo falavam que a linha era menor ea outra metade que a linha era maior do que a apresentada. O participante cobaia era sempre o sexto a responder.

Oberservando a figura acima, obviamente percebe-se que a resposta correta é C. Você só responderia errado se estivesse sob efeito de algum alucinógeno. Perceba que não estava sendo solicitado para observar um desenho complexo ou uma situação a ser interpretada.
A descoberta
Os resultados surpreenderam até mesmo Solomon Asch:
- 50% das pessoas deram a mesma resposta, seguindo o grupo, mesmo que ele estivesse errado.
- apenas 25% das pessoas negaram a dar as respostas erradas.
- no total, a taxa de conformidade foi de 33%.
Asch entrevistou as pessoas após o experimento. Os sentimentos relatados são bem parecidos com aqueles que já você já sentiu:
- todos sentiram ansiedade, com medo da reprovação pelos demais.
- a maioria disse que sabia qual era a linha correta, mas sentia que o grupo estava correto.
- alguns disseram que seguiram o grupo para não destoarem, mesmo sabendo que o grupo estava errado.
- um pequeno número disse que estava vendo a linha do mesmo tamanho apontado pelo grupo.
Ser conformista ou não: eis a questão
Este dilema shakesperiano nos acompanha todos os dias. Tem horas que agir conforme o grupo é uma benção, em outras uma armadilha. Muito do convívio social depende deste ato natural; caso contrário, nossa existência seria impraticável. Cabe a você a decisão de como agir. Mas, para que seja adequada, é necessário autoconhecimento, autoestudo e auto-observação. Você pode até estar pensando que é um não-conformista, até achar outros não-conformistas e agir da mesma maneira que eles.
E, para você que lidera equipes, é fundamental o conhecimento de que os seus liderados podem estar seguindo o que você diz só para estarem conformes. É importante que você dê voz a eles. Quem sabe algum deles não tem a resposta que a sua empresa precisa para dar a virada?
